The first week of hospice and homeschooling is coming to a close. This week didn't go exactly as planned. The idea to start was I would help with my grandfather's hospice care on the weekends and other family members would help during the other times.
In short order, it became clear that other family members wouldn't be able to help out as planned, so I stepped in, with my husband's blessing, as full-time hospice care.
This has pretty much required WP and me to stay with my grandparents. Overall my grandfather needs are minimal but physically demanding. He doesn't have the strength or ability to move independently. So it requires me to be able to move him as needed mainly transferring from one place to another. It also requires helping out with meal times and things like laundry. Laundry is just mainly so my grandmother doesn't have to do the stairs. She could if needed, but with everything going on helping her out in those matters is good too.
Mainly, I have done their shopping for them, help with housework, meal prep, and caring for my grandfather's physical needs. On top of this, I'm trying to manage my household's needs such as grocery shopping and bills. I may not be actually home, but my husband needs my assistance with those things too. Not to mention homeschooling!
I'm thankful more than ever that WP is a junior in high school and we have over the years worked on establishing independent learning. Yes, I still need to give her a lesson plan, assignments, and look over her work, but I'm thankful that I don't have to sit with her during all of her work. I'm glad she can work independently. Yay, for striving for the independent learner.
I'm also pleased that she took it upon herself on her free time to learn about Ancient Rome too. I'm not exactly sure what podcasts she has stumbled upon, but what she shares with me about what she's learning it seems it's pretty accurate. I will have to find out what podcast she's listening to. These podcasts while its learning and great I'm at this point not going to count it towards school or credit. I know I can, and I might change my mind on that, but I also think not everything my teen does, even if it's learning, needs to count or be on a transcript.
